SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -
The future of Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray is in the hands of the civil service board.
Ray's civil service hearing wrapped up just before 7 p.m. Friday.
Board members heard testimony from Ray and the mayor and other witnesses regarding the sanctions filed against him.
The city said it stands by its decision to fire him while Ray's attorney asked that he keep his job based on his clean record of more than 20 years with the city.
Ray's attorney asked for a suspension at most.
Supporters said firing the chief isn't an option.
"I'm very proud of him. I'm very proud of the police department. Whatever happened, it was a lot of miscommunication. People are busy doing things, but he should not be fired for something like that," said Anna Marie Fiske.
The civil service board said it will make a decision and notify all parties in writing.
