HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Friday afternoon Matthew Scarborough, Danny Nelson, and Carolyn Snoddy landed at Huntsville International Airport to a pleasant surprise. Family, friends, and supporters of the skaters waited with signs and balloons for their athletes to arrive in the Valley after spending two weeks overseas.

Scarborough was one of the skaters competing for the Special Olympics in South Korea.  He brought home a bronze medal for one of the events meter races.

"It was kind of cool, different," Scarborough said.

Matthew's dad Danny went to South Korea with the group. He said it was quite an experience.

"I love Korea," he said.  "The food, the people are phenomenal, and they just did a great job with putting on the Special Olympics."

Matthew, Danny, and Carolyn have spent years preparing to compete for the Special Olympics.  Their team coach, Anne Brown, said the five levels, her team skates at level three.

"We're just proud of them," Brown said.  "It's a big deal to go all the way to South Korea."

Now that they are back on U.S. soil, Brown says it's back to work for these medal winners.

"They will go back to their regular training schedule," she said.  "They come once or twice a week, which is good, and these three skaters skate year round.  This is not a seasonal event for them.  This is their sport."
