LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, and the hostage situation that began on an Alabama school bus in Dale County, Limestone County School leaders are looking for ways to improve safety.

Superintendent Dr. Thomas Sisk told the Board of Education he has asked the systems transportation department to review school bus driver protocol. He said about a half dozen new measures are already in place, some as simple as making adults who want to talk to the bus driver have to do it from the driver's side window.

Sisk said there are preliminary ideas being talked about, including fencing in some potentially vulnerable classrooms.

School leaders are considering putting a six-foot high fence around portable classrooms at Creekwood Elementary Schools.

School employees are also now getting identification badges. So far, about half of them have one. They may be required to be able to enter a school in the future.

The school system is still trying to find funding to put an armed guard in every school. Sisk said despite a push to get officers in all schools at the legislative session in Montgomery, he is not confident lawmakers will pass that funding. So the school district is asking the county commission to split the $250,000 it would take to put retired officers in Limestone County elementary schools.

School resource officers already patrol the high schools. Sisk said he wants school resource officers in every county school by the start of the next school year.

It is all part of a school safety review being done by school officials and the Limestone County Sheriff's Office. Each school will receive a 48-page report with recommendations when the review is complete.
