PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

When Prattville mayor Bill Gillespie steps up to the podium to give his 'state of the city' address to the council later this month, he'll have something to smile about.

A recent audit by Jackson-Thornton shows Prattville came in $1.9 million under budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

The mayor can't recall the city being able to do that with that amount in the 8 years he's been on the council and now mayor.

That's more than just a big number. It means creditors are being paid on time, according to the mayor.

"Two years ago we owed creditors $2 million. Now we're down to three, four thousand dollars," said Mayor Gillespie.

The mayor conceded the work it took to bring some sense of balance to the budget came a great cost; layoffs at the beginning of his tenure as mayor, separating the needs from the wants and old-fashioned penny pinching.

"You're right two years ago we faced a crash and burn situation where we weren't going to make payroll in May," said Mayor Gillespie.

Bill Gillespie often says Prattville isn't out of the woods but the recent audit seems to show the city is at least headed in the right direction.

Mayor Gillespie plans to talk about the audit during his state-of-the-city address during the council's regular meeting on February 19th.
