City of Decatur optimistic about 2013 revenue

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

The economy is growing in Decatur, and city leaders are optimistic 2013 is going to be a big year for businesses there.

The city just got their December revenue report. That shows how much tax money they collected on sales made in November, and it is the highest amount for November Decatur has ever seen.

A big boost came from a spike in liquor and beer sales.

When you break down the numbers, liquor was up 11 percent, beer was up 16 percent.

City leaders do not expect that unexpected alcohol windfall to sustain over time, though, with Priceville going wet, but what they do think is that businesses opening soon will push revenue higher this year.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market is set to open in late March. The new Kohl's, which will be the anchor store of the Market Shoppes of Decatur, is set to open in less than a month.

November sales tax revenue was up 4.6 percent over November of 2011, and the city is projecting fiscal 2013 will bring in more than a million more than the $25.9-million in sales tax revenue raised in 2012.

"I like to think people think our local economy is going to remain strong and get stronger and that they're willing to spend a little more money than they were in past years," said Mayor Don Kyle.

Decatur city leaders are looking forward to the next revenue report for December sales. The Christmas shopping season typically helps revenue nearly double over the average month, and with November coming in so well, they expect December will be good news too.
