FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team kept pace in the Gulf South Conference race Thursday with a 61-41 home win over Christian Brothers. The win completes a season sweep over the Lady Bucs and sets up a Saturday-afternoon showdown with Delta State for first place in the league standings.
With the win, UNA improves to 15-7 overall and 8-4 in GSC play. The Lions trail DSU by a half game, but own a 59-58 win over the Lady Statesmen this season.
On Thursday, a strong defensive performance and a balanced scoring effort paved the way for the victory. Christian Brothers shot just 29 percent from the floor while 10 different UNA players scored in the game.
Corinne White led the Lions with 12 points after going 4-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Jennifer Towne also reached double figures in scoring for UNA with 10 points on the night.
North Alabama 23-12 at the half after holding the visitors to only six field goals in the first 20 minutes of play. The Lions led by as many as 23 points after the break while the Lady Bucs hit all five of their three-point baskets in the second half.
UNA will host Delta State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
