DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Traffic delays are coming along one of Decatur's busiest traffic areas. Workers at the future Walmart Market site are preparing to do some road work that will shut down a section of the right southbound lane of 6th Avenue starting at 8th Street.
McWhorter and Company, Inc. is doing the work. An official with the contracting business said, weather permitting, they will begin the work on Saturday.
The first phase will not affect traffic much, but there will some significant backup at times when the second phase starts late next week.
First, they will close the west side of 8th Street down as they widen the road and put in turn lanes to provide access to the Walmart.
By the latter part of next week, they will move onto 6th Avenue, expanding the road and putting in turn lanes there. The outside southbound lane of 6th Avenue will be closed for a few hundred feet. The contractor estimated it will take two to three weeks to get that part done.
The owner of the Java Jaay Café, Bunk Price, said he expects some drivers will avoid the construction area, and that could affect his drive-by business.
"That can kind of deter people from going our direction or towards the opposite direction, so it might hinder traffic flow through here, which may slow business a little. But I'm guessing we'll still be alright," Price said.
The new Walmart Market is expected to be up and running by the end of March.
