Double Bridges in Asbury to be replaced

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A dangerous pair of bridges in Marshall County is getting a life saving makeover - Double Bridges, the pair of one-lane bridges where a young woman died when a fire truck went over the side.

Many a politician has come to see the dangers the particular area presents, but they have all come back empty handed.

Everyone is pointing to Alabama highway director John Cooper in making it finally happen. He is from Marshall County.

"I never thought it would be my children, both of them laying at the bottom of this creek.  It was the hardest day of my life," said Rebecca Nixon, whose child died at Double Bridges.

It was July 26, 2006 when her son and daughter were on a fire call with the Asbury Volunteer Fire Department and their fire truck wrecked on one of the bridges.

Her daughter, Alethea, died at the tender age of 17.

"So proud that we finally got this project to a head.  We are going to move forward and get a bridge built in that community up there," said James Hutcheson, Marshall County Commission Chairman.

Hutcheson said those dangerous bridges are on their way to replacement.

Nearly $5-million in state grant money has been approved to replace the two one-lane switch back bridges with a single straight bridge across Scarham Creek.

"Definitely not. I had given up for my lifetime," said Asbury Volunteer Fire Chief Albert Childress.

For years, Childress has worked to show politicians the dangers of the bridges and why they needed to be replaced.

"See, we have over a thousand students going to school and about a hundred teachers.  A lot of them cross these bridges every day, twice a day," said Childress. "It's a safety for all those busses that cross with all those kids."

Needless to say, there's a lot of excitement a new bridge is coming.

"I didn't want another parent to go through what I had been through with, so this it's going to be awesome," Childress said.

Engineering studies and design must take place before any construction. Engineers are estimating it will be at least two or three years.
