FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Florence could be one step closer to adopting a pet license fee.

Shelter volunteers hope a license program will help control the pet population by reducing the number of unwanted pets through spay and neuter programs.

The program is still in its early stages. In fact, the pros and cons of the proposed ordinance were presented to city leaders just this week.

Supporters of the program say it's not designed to create new revenue for the city. They say it's a way to help raise awareness and to help promote spay and neuter efforts throughout the city.

The fees would be based on whether a pet has already been fixed and range from $10 to $35.

Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler oversees the operations of the Florence Animal Shelter.

He said the program still has a long way to go before it can be put in place, but says this is just one way volunteers feel they can slow the growing pet population.

"One of the disadvantages of this proposed licensing fee is it does lieu in the way of addressing the disparity between a pet owner inside the city limits and pet owner outside the city limits. We have a county wide problem. This fee, unfortunately, is only proposed for the city of Florence," said Tyler.

City leaders said they expect a lot of opinions both for and against this program.

There will be several public hearings on the program before a decision is made by the council.
