TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -
A Colbert County man charged with multiple counts of capital murder and solicitation of murder will be in court later this month.
Derek Burt is accused of shooting and killing Harry Ricks in Colbert County in 2008. Investigators say Burt tied up Ricks' family during the home invasion. Ricks' managed to get free and that's when he was shot.
Colbert County investigators say while in jail, Burt tried to mail a letter to someone asking him to kill two members of the Ricks family. That letter was intercepted by jail staff.
Burt will be arraigned on the solicitation of murder charges on February 20.
