From Nicholls State Athletics
THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University football head coach Charlie Stubbs announced the Colonels' 2013 recruiting class Wednesday afternoon at the Century Club on National Signing Day.
Nicholls signed 17 student-athletes, with 16 high school seniors and one mid-year transfer. Of the 17 in the signing class, 13 are natives of Louisiana. The class features six players on offense, nine on defense and two classified as athletes.
"We are excited about this signing class. We are definitely staying with our philosophy of recruiting the core members of our team coming from the state of Louisiana." said Coach Stubbs, who is entering his fourth year at the helm of the Colonel football program. "We have some versatile players in many of the positions that I would consider playmakers. And in addition to having talent on the field, several of the signees are exceptional student-athletes."
Three of the six offensive players are linemen, led by first-team all-state 6-4/280 Hunter Alleman (Assumption). Two players from the Baton Rouge area, 6-5/230 Blake Hartman (St. Michael the Archangel) and 6-1/283 Brian Hernandez (Dutchtown), will also suit up on the offensive line.
With Nicholls spreading the ball around last season, three pass catchers round out the offense. Unanimous first-team all-state wide receiver 6-4/185 Jalen Williams (Westminster Christian Academy) highlights the group, joined by local tight end products 6-3/220 Stephen LeBouef (E.D. White), who earned LSWA First-Team All-State honors, and 6-2/240 Cody Morales (Hahnville).
Nicholls added two all-state honorable mention athletes – 6-1/175 Treavon Evans (South Lafourche) and 6-0/180 C.J. Okpalobi (St. Michael the Archangel). Evans played primarily as a wide receiver while Okpalobi was the Warriors' running back and kick returner.
On defense, Coach Stubbs added one defensive lineman, four linebackers and four defensive backs. On the defensive line, 6-2/330 Keithen English (A. Maceo Smith) comes to Nicholls after transferring from the University of Houston.
With the loss of three starting linebackers, Stubbs placed an emphasis on adding depth to the position. Hometown all-state honorable mention 6-3/220 Geoffrey Hebert (E.D. White) heads the group, joined by 6-0/215 Seth Keller (St. James) and 6-1/215 Jeremiah Thomas (Terrebonne). Also at linebacker is Mississippi native 6-0/225 Ronnie Walker (Biloxi).
In the defensive backfield, cornerbacks J.P. Reed (Loreauville) and Josh Singleton (Central Catholic) will suit up for the Colonels, along with Alabama safeties B.T. Sanders (Foley) and Kevin Singleton (Baker). Josh Singleton was named first-team all-state by the coaches, while Sanders earned all-region in his last season.
"This is just the first phase of our recruiting efforts," Coach Stubbs said. "We are going to continue to recruit for the next few months, looking to evaluate more high school players and even some transfers from FBS schools."
