HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle is going to Washington to sound the alarm over potentially crippling federal budget cuts. A wide range of automatic cuts, known as sequestration, is scheduled to kick in at the beginning of March.
Battle, as well as the mayors of Decatur and Enterprise, is planning the trip to Washington to explain to federal lawmakers that the cuts would kill jobs and devastate the economy of the Tennessee Valley.
The cuts were scheduled to hit at the end of last year and they've been delayed while Congress tries to make a new budget deal, but Battle said delay after delay doesn't help either.
"The Congress and administration's idea of fixing it at the very end is to push it off for two more months or push it off for three more months," said Battle. "That causes stagnation in your economy. That causes stagnation in your business community. That does not let anyone plan on growth and jobs. It does not let anyone plan on future projects they want to work on."
On Tuesday, President Barack Obama proposed an interim deal to cut some spending and raise taxes to put off the cuts by several more months.
