ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
A power outage in Athens left 5,457 customers without power for more than an hour Tuesday morning.
Athens Utilities said a jumper burned, causing the Athens District substation to go down along with the Sixth Street and Strange Street substation. A jumper connects two long lengths of wire at the top of a utility pole and ensures the continued flow of power from one wire or line to another.
Power was out from 6:33 a.m. until 7:46 a.m. from Lindsay Lane down U.S. 72 to the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority, including the southern portion of the city.
