Pink gun mistaken for toy; 3-year-old killed - WAFF-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Huntsville, AL

GREENVILLE, SC (WYFF) - Police have released more details about the death of a 3-year-old who was killed by a gunshot wound to the head Friday night.

Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler said Temorej Smith died at Cross Pointe in the Plantations at Haywood apartment community in Greenville.

Fowler ruled the death accidental, following an autopsy Saturday morning.

On Monday, police said the child and his 7-year-old sister were playing with a pink handgun, they thought was a toy, when the shooting happened.

Fowler said that the child was in the bedroom and his grandparents were in the living room when the gun went off.

Fowler said the child's parents were not in the home.

According to Johnathan Bragg of the Greenville Police Department, when officers arrived at the apartment just before 8 p.m. Friday, they found the young child that had been shot.

"If you have guns, if you own guns mostly we would prefer you have them in a lock box," Bragg said. "At least have them out of the reach of children."

Bragg told News 4 no one was in custody and that the investigation is ongoing. Police have yet to say who fired the weapon.

In response to the shooting, local activist Jack Logan, who founded the group "Put Down the Guns Young People," handed out 55 gun locks at Burger King on Haywood Road, just down the street from where the shooting occurred.

"I didn't want to see parents having guns laying around when a child could maybe get his or her hands on a gun," Logan said.

The Greenville Police Department stressed the importance of gun safety and said anyone in need of a gun lock can get one from the Police Department at 4 McGee Street.
