Investigators remain tight-lipped about a shooting that sent the Ashland Police Chief to the hospital over the weekend.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations has taken over the case and they are not releasing many details, including who they believe the shooter may be or where the shooting took place. We do know it happened Saturday.

Officials say Chief Benny Davis was off duty at the time and was shot in the chest. State Trooper Curtis Summerville says no arrests have been made in the shooting. He says it's still an active investigation, and when ABI finishes investigating, they will turn over their decision to the District Attorney, who will make a decision on an arrest.

Monday, Davis was still in the hospital but was making improvements, Mayor Larry Fetner said. Fetner added that Davis had opened one eye and his blood pressure was more stable.

The mayor also says the bullet is still lodged in the chief's back. Doctors are not removing it at this time, until they are sure the chief remains in stable condition. Fetner appointed an acting chief today as well.

As for the city of Ashland, residents are concerned. Almost everyone knows Chief Davis and spoke fondly of him.

"We're just a tight knit group of folks here at Ashland. The whole city employees are that way, of course the whole community is this way. So, we will appreciate the prayers of everybody during this time and hoping we can have a better report tomorrow," Fetner said.

"My boys were telling me, their mom had told me about shooting here with Chief Davis, and I was like wow! It's just sad. We've got him in our thoughts and prayers," said Ashland resident Stephen Sparks.
