Midland City, AL (WAFF) -
The man accused of holding a kindergartner hostage in a bunker in Midland City served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
U.S Navy Officials confirm 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes served from October 8, 1964 until January 10, 1969. He was an Aviation Maintenance Administrationman Third Class – AZ3.
Navy officials say Dykes was stationed at Treasure Island, California and Atsugi, Japan.
He received the following awards and decorations:
Navy Unit Commendation
Meritorious Unit Commendation
Good Conduct Medal
National Defense Service Medal
Vietnam Service Medal
Navy officials say they cannot comment about the conditions of Dykes' discharge.
