DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Starting Friday, bad check writers in Marshall and DeKalb counties will have the chance to pay their debt and avoid jail time.
There are files of hundreds of bad checks that have not been paid up, so the district attorneys in both counties are allowing people to come in and pay without a penalty.
However, if they are not paid by March, then bad check writers will be picked up.
"They can avoid being picked up on their job at home or church or wherever they might be. And they avoid both the humiliation of having to be arrested and then the additional expense that's added as a result of having to go to court," said DeKalb County DA Mike O'Dell.
In Marshall County, bad check writers are urged to contact the Worthless Check Unit at 256-505-0960 and get their bad checks paid in full, and contact the Restitution Recovery Unit at 256-582-0528 for all other outstanding court ordered monies.
In DeKalb County, go the office or call Ann Ashley at the DeKalb County Courthouse at 256-845-8550. They have also made it possible for people to pay online with a credit card by visiting this website.
