MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A man who fled from deputies following an attempted traffic stop was shot after a chase through two counties.
The chase began in Limestone County and ended on Jeff Road near Sparkman Middle School in Madison County.
A woman in the Capstone Subdivision called police when the man looked into her window and fled when he realized someone was home. About 45 minutes later, a deputy attempted to stop his vehicle and a chase ensued.
The suspect, 20-year-old Dexter Lee Fair, rammed two patrol cars during the pursuit.
Authorities said the suspect shot at deputies, and they returned fire. The suspect was shot, but is still alive. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Madison County authorities said Fair was in surgery at Huntsville Hospital and sustained what they believe to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Jeff Road at Carters Gin was blocked off to traffic while crews worked the scene. Limestone and Madison County Sheriff's Departments responded along with HEMSI.
Sparkman High School was placed on lockdown as a precaution, but schools have been given the all clear.
Fair is believed to be a known burglar who investigators have been searching for after multiple burglaries in the East Limestone area. Investigators said when deputies approached the vehicle Thursday, there appeared to be stolen items in the car, including a flat screen TV, a laptop computer, and assorted jewelry.
The Madison County Sheriff's Office is investigating the officer involved shooting.
