Officers search for baby's body at Russellville home

RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Law enforcement officers are digging in the yard of a Russellville home, searching for a baby's body.

Russellville Police got a tip from state fire officials that there could be a baby buried in the yard of the home at Wilson Avenue and Hunterwood. Crime scene tape was set up around the yard Wednesday night.

Russellville Police, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, and other officials returned to the home Thursday morning with digging equipment.

Police said they're going off a tip that a baby was born inside the home and lived for a few hours before being buried in the yard. They said evidence in the house and several hits from cadaver dogs lead them to believe the tip could be valid.

The incident is believed to have happened as recently as a few months ago or in 2009.

The owner of the home, Mike Windam, committed suicide several weeks ago, according to police. They're unsure if his death is related or not.

When asked if this could possibly be connected with the disappearance of Andrea Gonzalez, investigators confirmed it isn't. The 5-year-old girl went missing from Russellville in 1993.
