BELLE RIVER, LA (WAFB) -
Search and rescue teams are still looking for a 28-year-old man who may have drowned near the Belle River public boat launch Wednesday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Mike Waguespack, a woman called around 2:30 p.m. saying she and her husband when out to scout areas to set crawfish traps. When they returned to the launch, he backed his truck down to pick up his boat.
His wife was in the truck and noticed that the boat did not hit the trailer. When she got out she saw the boat adrift and saw him trying to swim while yelling "call 911." She lost sight of him soon after that.
Authorities are using a sonar device to search the water.
WAFB's Kiran Chawla reports that the missing man is a Baton Rouge firefighter.
