TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals firefighter is being hailed a hero after saving a woman from her burning home just before 9 a.m. Monday on East 1st Street in Tuscumbia.

Bert Johnston said he did what any other firefighter would've done in that situation. He's said he's just happy the woman made it out safely.

"We always say it's life over limb, life over property, and my first thing was get her out," said Johnston.

Johnston is a five year veteran with the Tuscumbia Fire Department. He said his actions this morning were instincts based on his training.

"I didn't have time to put my gear on. I mean, I had my coat and my turnouts on, but I didn't have my air pack on," he said.

Johnston said when the woman called 911, she said she was trapped in the front of the house. The back of the house was engulfed in flames.

"First thing I did was I got out of the truck, came up to the door, and kicked the door in, and as soon as I did, I just got overcome with smoke and had to get a breath and come back in. And as I was coming back in to get her, she was actually coming out," he said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation - minor injuries for what could have taken her life.

"It's uplifting to me that I know she's doing well," said Johnston. "This is what we love to do. I mean, everybody's running away from the fire; we run into it."

The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
