CHARENTON, LA (WAFB) -
A Chitimacha Tribe police officer is dead and two St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputies are in serious condition after a shooting in the town of Charenton. Charenton is southeast of New Iberia, about halfway to Morgan City.
The suspected shooter, 48-year-old Wilbert Thibodeaux, has been arrested and booked with arson and two counts each of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Louisiana State Police spokesman Tpr. Stephen Hammons said the officers responded to neighbors' calls saying a man was walking the streets with a weapon. Hammons said when the officers arrived on the scene the armed suspect began firing at them.
State Fire Marshals also discovered a mobile home on fire that authorities believe was started by Thibodeaux. Once the fire was extinguished, they found the body of a civilian, 78-year-old Eddie Lyons. State Police believe Lyons was shot before the fire.
Hammons said the suspect has a gunshot wound around his torso. They are not sure if the wound was self-inflicted or from deputies.
The Chitimacha officer was pronounced dead at the scene. The two injured deputies were taken to hospitals in New Orleans and Lafayette. It is reported that their conditions were downgraded from critical on Sunday afternoon.
A press conference will be held Monday and the deputies' names will be released.
