FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Nearly a hundred dogs have been dropped at the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter this week, leaving volunteers left to scramble to find homes for these pets before their time runs out.

"This week has been ridiculous," said Debbie Rapphun with the shelter.

Every kennel inside the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter is full.

"Tuesday we had 42 dogs dropped - 42. We had 22 puppies dropped yesterday, and I think we had 30-something dogs and puppies Wednesday," said Rapphun.

She said the spike in animal drops is unusual this time of year.

"For January, February and a little of March, we should be doing so great that we actually have a little breathing time to get out the ones that are in foster," she said.

But it is not.

"We're full and when 42 dogs come into the garage and into the holding, it's either they get put to sleep or we beg on Facebook for fosters or someone to come in," Rapphun said. "I don't know what to do except just to plea and beg the public to be responsible and help us fight this problem."

She said the fight requires support from the entire community.

"I'm asking people just to be responsible for their pets. We need people to spay and neuter. It would cut down tremendously the amount of drop offs we have here," she said.

If you're interested in adopting, fostering or volunteering at the shelter, you can contact them directly.

They also have a Facebook page where they keep updated information on all the animals they have.
