Redstone Report: Out of the classroom and into the field

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A lesson learned in the classroom can be informational, but let's face it, not always fun. So sometimes you have to bring out the big guns. More than 50 interns got the chance to check out the Army's field artillery launchers on Redstone Arsenal.

Lt. Col. Frederick Hughes explained it as "a chance to let them see some of the technology, how the systems work, what are the mechanical aspects of it, the hydraulic aspects, the electronic aspects, as well as how all the systems come together."

It's not all about learning though. The experience also gives the interns a chance to think about their future career paths. Lt. Col. Hughes reminds people that it's not just soldiers who work for the military.

"There are plenty of civilians who work to support the solider in the field," he said.

People like engineers or contract specialist, which is what Robyn Johnson, a recent college graduate, wants to do.

Johnson said looking over the field rocket launcher gives her a new found respect for her potential career path.

"It allows us to see how much of an impact our jobs have. The sooner we get it done, the better off the soldiers are," she said.

She also described the amount of hands-on experience as something she wasn't expecting.

"I thought we were going to be in them and looking at them and seeing what was in them, I didn't think I was going to be able to be pushing the buttons and executing the launch."

More intern experiences are planned on Redstone Arsenal, in different sectors, to give students a full range of what they could one day be working with.
