MONROE, LA -

Officials are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash in north Louisiana that left four people dead Thursday afternoon.

The aircraft went down near Monroe around 2 p.m.

Two of the victims were from north Louisiana.

According to KNOE, sources identified one of the victims as Dean Hart, Sr. of West Monroe.

The station reported family members confirmed Max Larche of Bastrop was also killed.

The pilot and other victim were from Little Rock, AR.

"I looked up in the sky and saw the plane out of control," said Derrick Harrison. "It started twirling in a lot of circles. It went straight to the ground and exploded."

"I just heard a big crash boom," added Shelia Dixon. "I thought it was thunder and when I came out here all I saw was black smoke."

Four minutes before the crash, the pilot alerted air traffic controllers of problems with the plane's landing gear.

It was travelling to Monroe from Beaumont, TX.
