HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Police say everyone bears some responsibility when it comes to pedestrian safety.

One day after a man was hit and killed trying to cross seven lanes of traffic at the corner of University Drive and Arctic Street, police are giving advice to keep it from happening again.

Officials with HPD said the area on University Drive is a problem for people crossing the street where they aren't supposed to, especially at night. They strongly encourage pedestrians to walk a litter further to the authorized crosswalk areas before trying to cross the street.

They also ask drivers to be aware of those people trying to get across. They said it's the responsibility of the driver and the pedestrian to make sure that everyone stays safe.

"Even during the day it can be dangerous, but especially at night.  So, please, go to the authorized crosswalks, stay in there when you have been given the light to cross, have the bright clothing on, and be aware of your surroundings," said Dr. Harry Hobbs with Huntsville Police.
