MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

North Alabama is preparing for the freezing rain to hit the area early Friday morning.

Huntsville crews started putting barricades up in problem areas in anticipation of road closures. They did the same thing last week when a winter storm dumped several inches of snow, and temperatures hovered around freezing.

"Ice is hard to handle because if we put salt on the bridges, we have to get it just before the ice gets it," said City of Huntsville's Jackie Burgreen on keeping the roads safe.

Madison Police have changed several policies since last week's storm. They plan on having more communication with the media and the public on road closures and school delays. Expect to see more patrols on the streets too, as the freezing rain hits the community.

"We have our officers on standby for special deployment, and we're going to make sure we have the resources in play," said Madison Police Captain John Stringer.

Schools started announcing Friday delays a day in advance.

Madison County Schools will monitor road conditions starting around 3 a.m. They don't want to put students, parents, or faculty on the roads if conditions deteriorate.

"We try to notify parents as early as possible, and we try to make sure that someone is at home if we do let out early," said Madison County Schools spokesperson Geraldine Tibbs.
