EXCLUSIVE: Phenix City mother speaks out about missing son

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Phenix City mother held her toddler tight just one day after he went missing for hours.  Hundreds of volunteers showed up to help her find the 3 year-old Wednesday night.

She says she thanks God for returning her son to her because she knows the outcome could have been different.

"I'm running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to find him," said Sarah Williams, mother of three year-old Alden Nowlin.

Williams expressed her gratitude to the community for helping her find her only son.

"It was amazing how many volunteers came [to my home]. They dropped everything and came out to help us," said Williams.

Williams explained it all happened so fast. She turned her back for a second and Alden was gone.

"He was outside playing in the yard with the dog. I walked inside for a few minutes when I came back outside, the gate was opened and he and the dog are nowhere to be seen," Williams said.

It was down a dirt path the energetic tike took off after the family dog, Sarge. Williams called her mother and other family members to help her look for Alden.  She said when it started to get dark that's when she knew they needed help finding him.

"We had the fire department…helicopters, blood hounds, and a lot of volunteers."  Alden was missing in the woods for more than five hours.

"Were you scared," News Reporter Brittany Dionne asked.

"No," said Alden.

However, Alden's mother said she was petrified.

"I was terrified last night because this one guy was talking about a swamp behind his house. Every time someone mentioned a swamp, I wanted to just burst out crying because it could've turned out a lot worse than it did," said Williams.

Alden was found around 10:30 Wednesday night.

"They say he was asleep on the ground, passed out. He missed the helicopter and everything," said Williams

Alden's mother said she'd never been so happy to fix her son a bowl of cereal and watch cartoons with him.
