Last week we heard a lot of complaints from parents about school districts delaying their opening or closing early due to the weather. While no one likes to see lost class time or in the case of working parents, the inconvenience of finding child care, it is the safety of our kids that has to come first. Before complaining about districts over reacting to possible flooding or icy roads, people should think of what the reaction would be if there was an accident that could have been prevented. Too often we look for things to be right or wrong, black or white. In reality, things are rarely that simple. Tough choices have to be made and I for one am thankful that the people making those decisions put the safety of students first and the happiness of parents second. I know how many complaints we heard, I can't begin to imagine how many the schools themselves took. I think people are too quick to complain and too slow to thank school leaders for making the tough calls.
