By now everyone is aware of what happened with Notre Dame football star Manti Ta'o The supposed loss of his girlfriend to a car accident. The revelation that the girlfriend never existed. The fact that it was all part of what appears to be an elaborate hoax perpetrated through social media. A hoax that tricked an exceptionally naive young man and the national media. I believe one of the many problems with social media is the false reality it can convey with combined with complete anonymity How many people have been tricked into believing they were loved or hated by someone on social media that didn't exist in real life? We have told the stories in our news - kids committing suicide after being harassed by people using fake names and accounts. We need to stop connecting electronically and re-commit to connecting personally. The confidence created by getting to know someone on face book should never take the place of getting to know someone face to face.
