MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

When Dr. Rodney D. Soto, a certified Neurologist and Holistic medicine doctor, tests his patients, he checks their entire lifestyle. He's looking for little things that can lead to multiple problems.

"It's basically a natural form of healing that focuses and addresses the root of the problem to try to resolve it," he said.

It's common for a patient to come in complaining about something like headaches, obesity, stress, or other problems only to find there is a bigger medical concern.

"Patient comes to us to complain about, let's say thyroid disorder, and we end up finding out that in reality they have more, beyond just the thyroid, and they have multiple systems involved and affected by the environment, and nutrition and lifestyles," said Soto.

He said this methodology also helps overweight people. When it comes to weigh loss, many holistic physicians will tell you, you're not fat, you're toxic.

"In reality, the body loses the ability to activate the metabolism to lose the pounds because of environmental toxins that we encounter every day. In our foods and our home and the overall environment, pollution critically affects the metabolic pathways in the body that allow us to do that," said Soto.

He said good nutrition will eliminate the toxins through the liver and digestive tract.

Annette Taylor's family had some health concerns that were not being helped.

"We had pretty well run the gamut and tried lots of other doctors, and when my son with Celiac disease was not feeling any better after six months on a gluten free diet and he was leaving for college in six weeks, I called a friend of mine in the health industry," Taylor said.

She and her son went to Dr. Soto. She said her son is much better now that they know about the food allergies and nutritional deficiencies.

"For me, it was like some acid reflux type symptoms that were nagging and annoying."

Taylor said holistic practices helped them both.

Soto said he wants people to understand there is not a particular treatment, but rather a new lifestyle.
