FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals woman is out of thousands of dollars after she let a man claiming to be homeless and his friend live with her during the holidays.

One of the men was caught in Lauderdale County, the other in Jefferson County. Both men were caught driving stolen vehicles.

Investigators said 45-year-old Michael Canaday faces a list of charges, including theft of property, identity theft, and 11 counts of fraudulent use of a credit card. He's being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

The other man, 34-year-old Christopher Marsh, is being held in Jefferson County on similar charges.

Investigators said a 60-year-old woman was letting her dogs out on Sweetwater Avenue when Michael Canaday walked up. Canaday allegedly told the woman he was homeless and she let him stay with her for about a month. During that time, his friend Christopher Marsh also came over and stayed.

While they were there, investigators said the men stole nearly $10,000 from her checking account and used her credit card nearly a dozen times. It wasn't until after they left that the woman noticed her money had gone missing

Investigators say they weren't able to recover any of the money.
