GURLEY, AL (WAFF) -
Families in Gurley met with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management on Tuesday night.
They were there to discuss their plans for a rock quarry that Vulcan Management wants to reopen in the area. The project is expected to be built on the west side of Gurley mountain, just off Highway 72 in Madison County.
Many Gurley residents had a lot of questions about the quarry, but they were unable to get answers because the forum was strictly to hear concerns, not answer questions.
But still, many people made their stance very clear as to what they don't want in their community.
Many seats were filled at Madison County Elementary for people opposed to the quarry project. They urged ADEM to deny Vulcan the permit it needs to operate, and people lined up one by one to have their voices heard.
Since the meeting wasn't meant to answer questions, the comments and concerns were documented by ADEM and Vulcan and will be addressed and considered at a later date.
ADEM will continue to accept comments about the quarry until Wednesday at 5 p.m., and they will make a decision later when everything has been considered.
