Funding approved for 3 new weather sirens in Arab

ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

The Arab City Council is buying three brand new weather warning sirens, and the funding was approved Tuesday night.

The memories of April 27th are still fresh in everyone's mind, and Arab leaders are mindful that the storms killed several people in the nearby Ruth community.

In any disaster, lessons are learned; and what they learned is there are some weak coverage areas in Arab they want to see filled.

Plans are in place to put up three new sirens. One would be placed near Haynes Road and Old Huntsville Highway. Another is near Heroes Lane and Highway 69, and the third would be near the intersection of City Park Drive NE and Fry Gap Road.

The total cost is just less than $46,000, but Mayor Bob Joslin said the city obtained a federal grant and would only have to pay 20 percent of that, bringing the local cost to just more than $11,000.

Joslin believes it's well worth the money and so do some residents who will depend on it to possibly save their life.

"A lot, a lot of people in this area and we have some shut-ins, and we need as much time as we can to take care of them also," said resident David Cobb.
