MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Condolences are pouring in from all corners of the state, for a Marshall County lawmaker who passed away Tuesday morning.
Hinton Mitchem served three decades in the Alabama State Senate, representing Sand Mountain. Mitchem retired in 2010.
The former tractor salesman began his career as an Albertville city councilman in 1968. He was elected to the State House in 1974, then the Senate two years later.
Mitchem ran an unsuccessful campaign for Lieutenant Governor in 1986.
While in Montgomery, he focused his efforts on improving Alabama's education system and giving low income Alabamians access to affordable housing loans.
Moss Funeral Home in Cullman is handling the arrangements.
