ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
During a forum in Athens, some Alabama legislators said education and efficiency are expected to be some of the hottest issues in Montgomery this legislative session.
State Senator Arthur Orr was one of four legislators who addressed concerns from the public on Monday night. He expects to hear a lot about initiatives like closing local ABC stores and merging different law enforcement agencies to save money. But he said it could go even deeper.
"Another one that we're looking at is our state parks system. Should the state be in the hotel and golf business in the 21 century? That's another question regarding the true mission of state government," said Orr.
State Senator Bill Holtzclaw expects student issues to be near the forefront of a lot of debates.
"Local control for education," said Holtzclaw. "We've really got to work to get the school calendar back to local control."
During Monday night's question and answer session, people also asked the panel to address issues including federal mandates on gun control. Republicans Orr and Holtzclaw, along with Republicans Mac McCutcheon and Dan Williams, agreed they supported the second amendment, but the group expect to see legislation both for and against gun measures to get tossed around Montgomery.
