MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

At least one parent in Marshall County was upset their children had to go to school on this state and federal holiday of Martin Luther King Day.

Every school system in the county, except for Albertville, was also in school due to changes to the school calendar passed by the legislature.

While many people enjoyed being off for Martin Luther King Day, it was a normal school day for children in Marshall County, Arab, Guntersville, and the Boaz city school systems.

Marshall County Superintendent Tim Nabors said this is the first time he can remember ever having class on the federal holiday.

Last year the state legislature voted to push back the school calendar for an extra two weeks to see if it would create more tourism in the state at the end of the summer. School systems were forced to go additional days to ensure they meet minimum requirements for classroom instruction.

"In order to meet the 180 days to get our time in...  So, it was just a decision that we had to cut some days somewhere," said Nabors. "It's not that we wanted to.  It's just one of those things that we just had to do."

To meet the mandatory day requirement, Nabors said kids this year are also required to go to school on Labor Day as well as Presidents Day.
