A man was killed Friday afternoon in a shooting that involved an Oxford police officer.

Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge says two officers went to the Dr. Phone Fix cell phone store to serve felony warrants on a suspect who was inside the store around 1:15 p.m.

Partridge says the suspect was not an employee in the store or a customer. Police believe he wandered into the business on foot. The store, which repairs cell phones and sells cell phone accessories, is located on Snow Street directly across from the Dillard's department store at Quintard Mall.

Chad Pesnell's mother works at the store and he stopped by tonight. He heard about the shooting from his mother, who spoke to the suspect moments before the fatal shooting.

"She said everything was fine, that he was talking and acting very normal, very compliant and no issues," Pesnell said.

Chad said his mother took the suspect's order, but right after that she left the store to run an errand.

The officers asked the suspect to step outside the store since there were customers inside, but he refused. Chief Partridge says the suspect pulled out a knife and lunged at an officer, who then pulled a Taser and tased the man.

Partridge says the Taser did not stop the man, so one of the officers shot and killed the suspect in the store. Customers inside the store witnessed the shooting. The county coroner responded to the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

Rebecca Brimer works close to the strip mall where the shooting happened and it has her considering security.

"They always tell us to keep prepared, keep a weapon on us. It does scare me but I feel secure here," she said.

As for Pesnell's mom, he's says the events have been hard for her to comprehend.

"She's had a really tough time," Pesnell said. "She left early after being here for a while and she told me, 'I just got to get away.'"

Oxford police declined to say what type of warrants they had against the suspect, but added that another law enforcement agency also wanted the suspect for felony charges. The suspect's name has not been released, but Partridge says the man was not from Oxford.

Chief Partridge says the investigation has been turned over to the ABI since it involved a police officer. ABI officers have arrived to the scene of the shooting to investigate.

Both officers were with the Oxford Police Department, and one was also with Oxford PD Special Investigations.
