LEIGHTON, AL (WAFF) -
An overnight fire destroyed a Colbert County business.
Firefighters responded to the fire around 10:30 p.m. at the Flower Box in Leighton.
The business was destroyed. The shop had been in business for over 20 years and was one of the only businesses still in town.
The building is still too
dangerous to allow crews to get inside and start their investigation.
Several people in town are devastated by the
loss.
"It's sad. I mean, it
just gives you chill bumps to think about it. We are truly going to miss this
shop," said Flower Box customer Barbara Holley.
Holley picked up an order
from the Flower Box less than 24 hours before the fire broke out.
Holley is the manager at
the Leighton Senior Center.
She said the shop's owner,
Ivanell Weaver, would help give flowers to senior citizens on their birthdays.
"Yesterday, I had
gone over; she fixed me a red rose for May Fannie Horton," said Holley. "She
brought so much happiness because some of those people had never had a flower
for their birthday."
The fire broke out around
10:30 Thursday night.
It took several hours for
firefighters to put out the flames.
Now all that's left in its
spot are charred remains of a shop that brought happiness to the small town.
"She really was a big
part of the community," Holley said. "Ivanell, I love you. The town
loves you, and we're praying for you."
It is unknown what caused
the fire.
Fire crews say they will
be back on site tomorrow morning to begin their investigation.
