Sunday Forecast: heavy rains and cool temperatures

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A strong cold front moving through the area today is producing another round of locally heavy rains and even a few reports of severe weather. An off-duty National Weather Service employee in Zachary reported wind damage shortly after 1 PM as the front pushed through, with several trees apparently snapped along Hwy. 64. A few tornado warnings have also been issued for areas east and northeast of Baton Rouge this afternoon, but as of 3 PM, there have been no confirmed tornadoes or reports of damage from those storms. The St. Martin Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness did post damage pictures on Facebook from the community of Parks from apparent wind damage (possibly a tornado) this morning.

The severe weather threat will end quickly for WAFB viewers today as the cool front slides down to the coast, but rains -- heavy at times -- will continue off-and-on for the next couple of days. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for the vast majority of the WAFB viewing area through at least 6 AM on Monday. While rains shouldn't be nearly as heavy as what we experienced earlier this week, an expected 1" to 3" of rainfall could still create localized flooding given the recent heavy rains.

Continued wet weather over the next several days is also unwelcome news for those along area rivers. A number of sites remain in flood and the added rains will likely result in additional river level increases over the next couple of days. Temperatures have dropped 15-20 degrees with the passage of the cold front today and much cooler weather can be expected over the next several days. In fact, not only will we deal with periods of rainfall, but temperatures may struggle to get out of the 40°s on both Monday and Tuesday!
