MADISON, AL (WAFF) -
The Madison City School District is doing its part to fight the flu.
With the virus spreading so quickly, school leaders are taking action to
prevent the problem from getting worse.
Fortunately, the flu hasn't struck students in Madison too hard, but with a
long season still ahead, they want to keep it that way.
That's why they are offering free flu mist vaccines to all students Monday,
January 14th.
The flu mist is a more friendly option than the shot for many kids, and is
just as effective.
The nasal spray will be offered free of charge to everyone.
For those with private insurance, a bill will be sent to the company.
School officials hope between urging students to wash their hands regularly
and to get the vaccine, they can keep the flu from becoming rampant.
"We will do whatever we can do to protect our kids and keep them from
getting sick. Not only does having the flu affect the student's attendance, but
a lot of times the parents have to take off work. The flu can keep someone out
for up to one week, and sometimes longer," said Madison Schools Lead Nurse
Bonnie Davis.
Permission slips were sent out earlier this week, but it is not too late to
sign up.
