LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
The Shoals couple accused of sexually assaulting a young girl and taking photos of her were in court on Friday.
Patricia and Matthew Ayers went before a Lauderdale County judge for their initial appearance.
They didn't have much to say inside the courtroom, just answered the judge's questions. However, the two of them could be seen chatting with each other while they waited to be taken back to jail.
They did request a court appointed attorney.
Investigators said after they seized electronics from the Ayers' home, they found even more explicit photos of the young girl.
When she was arrested, Patricia claimed the photos were for medical purposes.
The new pictures found by investigators seem to say something else. Some of those photos were very sexual in nature.
The couple faces a list of charges, including production and possession of child pornography, sexual abuse, rape, and sodomy.
A Madison County man discovered the photos when he downloaded material from Patricia Ayers' computer.
"The photos show sexual acts between Matthew, Patricia, and the little girl. They were performing sexual acts on her and her on them," said Richard Richey with Lauderdale County's Sheriff's Department.
Investigators said forensics is still looking through the electronics taken from the home.
They said both Patricia and Matthew could face additional charges if more photos are found.
Investigators said the three children living in the home with them are in DHR custody.
Both Patricia and Matthew are being held on a $1-million bond each.
