Judge Roy Moore, standing before a packed crowd in the Alabama Supreme Court building Friday, placed his hand on a stack of Bibles and took the oath that puts him back in the state's chief justice position.
The Chief Justice's chair is one Judge Moore knows well. He was removed from it a decade ago for refusing a federal order to remove a large, granite display of the Ten Commandments he installed inside the judicial building. Moore's refusal and ultimate removal from the bench earned him nationwide attention as "Alabama's Ten Commandments Judge".
He made two unsuccessful attempts at seeking the governor's office and launched an exploratory committee to run for president, though his campaign never gained traction.
Moore has been head of the Montgomery-based Foundation for Moral Law, formed after his removal from the bench in 2003.
Moore has publicly stated that the Ten Commandments monument will not become an issue in his new tenure on the court. He says the biggest issue facing him is the court's budget. He's promised to make the issue a top priority and will ask lawmakers for more funding.
