Redstone Report: Helicopters head from Huntsville to Iraq

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Three helicopters are headed to Iraq. The aircrafts were purchased by that country through the US government.

It's a business deal that benefits many people in the Tennessee Valley. Kevin Richardson works for the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command.

"It brings money into the government installation at Redstone, but it also brings in a lot of the ancillary organizations, such as SESI, that are stationed out here getting a lot of that work," said Richardson. "So we're actually bringing in money from these other countries that helps support the local economy."

The helicopters aren't just given to other countries, they have to pay for them.

"The customer, whether it's Iraq or any of the other 145 customers we deal with, bring generally their own money to purchase these items from the US military," explained Richardson.

When it comes to these purchases, lots of agencies are involved, including the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command, AMCOM on Redstone Arsenal, and SESI. These agencies will continue to benefit from this business, because this wasn't the first shipment of aircrafts overseas, and it won't be the last.
