Fired officer's attorneys accuse board of illegal procedure

Fired Muscle Shoals police officer Greg Scoggins' attorneys are now accusing the city's civil service board of illegal procedure.

Scoggins was terminated after his arrest for illegal hunting.

In it a letter to the mayor and the head of the civil service board, Scoggins' attorneys accuse the civil service board of prematurely discussing the case during their monthly meeting.

It goes on to say the city clerk, Ricky Williams, was upset to hear the discussion regarding Scoggins took place. He said he had not been made aware of any discussions regarding Scoggins' case among members of the civil service board.

Scoggins' attorneys said the situation has become a quote "kangaroo court atmosphere" instead of a fair and impartial hearing before the board.

Scoggins' attorneys have requested a new civil service board be appointed to hear the case.

"I don't think a single one of them in there compromised, not a single one of those people, because of that hearing that they had up there when they talked about this hearing, should be allowed to hear Greg Scoggins and the mayor's termination of him," said attorney Billy Underwood.

The city's attorney said he is working on defending the city on this case and has no comments at this time.

The civil service hearing is expected to take place on January 15th. However, Scoggins' attorneys are requesting a delay until March.
