STEVENSON, AL (WAFF) -
Investigators spent the day examining evidence from a fatal fire in Jackson County on Birch Avenue in Stevenson.
Fire officials believe the man may have been trying to get out when he was overtaken by the smoke and fire.
Stevenson firefighters were called to the scene of the mobile home on Birch Avenue early Tuesday, just before one o'clock in the morning.
They said the home was fully engulfed when they arrived and learned several minutes after being on scene that a man was believed to be in the home.
After 10 to 15 minutes of fighting the fire, it was put out and they began a recovery search.
Fire officials said they eventually found the body of 77-year-old Kenneth Ray Arnold on the floor of the home near the front.
"The body was laying just right, almost to the front door. It appears he was aware that the house was on fire and attempted to exit the house," said Luke Ballard with the Stevenson Fire Department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.
