MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama lawmakers are tackling the issue of school safety.

Lawmakers, law enforcement, and educators will meet in Montgomery Wednesday to discuss ways to improve school security.

Members of the House and Senate Education Policy committees will hold the joint hearing.

The hearing will include House Speaker Mike Hubbard, Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, Alabama Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier and state schools Superintendent Tommy Bice. The meeting will also include other law enforcement and education officials.

The meeting is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 617 at the Alabama Statehouse.

Officials have said they expect various ideas for protecting students and teachers from school shootings will be discussed and possible legislation proposed.

Wednesday's meeting was scheduled after the recent school shootings in Connecticut

Madison City Schools started increasing security after the discovery middle school shooting in 2010. They're still working on it and plan to increase security at the school's entryways soon.

Dennis James, director of student services, will attend Wednesday's meeting.

James said they're constantly evaluating their programs and seeking ways to improve.

"It's bringing together many varied groups and I think we just want to hear their thoughts," he said. "They're experts in a certain field and they're bringing these fields together. We're experts in education. We want to hear from the experts in safety and security and listen to them and follow their guidance."
