FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A push is on to transform a theater in Florence. It's an effort to make the Shoals Theater a little like Birmingham's Vintage Alabama Theater.

The proposal is to bring in digital projection equipment to make the theater a place for independent films and screenings, in addition to live shows.

It's called the Silver Screen Project, and community leaders want to help the Shoals Theater not only re-live its past but give it an additional means of providing entertainment to the area.

"A lot of folks have been talking about their interest in having some independent film series. You know, at this point in time you have to go to Nashville or Birmingham sometimes to see some films outside of the mainstream," said Teryl Shields, executive director of Florence Main Street.

Built in 1948, the Shoals Theater served as the only local venue for motion pictures for years. Over time, it evolved and is now mostly known for live stage productions.

Community leaders want to help revive the theater's motion picture past by adding a $70,000 projection system.

"It's kind of part of the heart of the community, the Shoals Theater is, and so you want to give because you want to be a part of the community you want to see that entity the Shoals Theater exist, continue to thrive and be strong and offer entertainment opportunities to the community," Shields said.

Florence Main Street and the Shoals Theater plan to host a series of entertainment events throughout the spring and summer to pay for the project.
