BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
About 60 members of the Baton Rouge Republican Party met for
lunch on Tuesday with gun control on their minds. Former East Baton Rouge
Sheriff Greg Phares was the keynote speaker at the event.
Phares brought
several pistols to show the audience. He also talked about gun safety and gun
control laws that are being talked about in Washington, D.C.
"I very passionately believe in the right of private
citizens to defend themselves," says Phares. "It is very likely not to be
effective and the effect that it will have is to disarm good people who don't
want to go through the Hassel of whatever hoops they will have to jump through.
They just say I'm not going to do that. The bad guys, the monsters like that
guy in Connecticut, that guy in Aurora, Colorado, they will get weapons. The
will spend months planning how to murder people."
Local Republican Woody Jenkins also weighed in on the gun
control debate. "We were really concerned about the attempts to violate our
natural right to self defense," says Jenkins. We expect some pretty serious
proposals to come from the Obama administration."
The republicans say they will meet again next month to
discuss how to defeat the oncoming legislation that Vice President Joe Biden's
task force is charged with drawing up in the coming months.
