BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

James Holmes' orange hair is gone and traded for an orange prison jumpsuit. With his hands shackled in front of him, the 25-year-old accused of opening fire at a midnight showing of the latest Batman movie sat listening to testimony at his pretrial hearing.

Victims of the shooting were urged to not appear at Monday's hearing because of the graphic details and images that would be presented. However, two overflow rooms for survivors and family were prepared for the many that showed up.

Baton Rouge native Bonnie Kate Porciau remembers a good bit of what happened inside that theater.

"I don't deserve to be alive. That was hard. Having to trust God and at 17 be like, I don't understand why something like this would have to happen. Why would he die and not me," said Porciau.

She and some friends had just returned from a mission trip in Haiti and went to see the midnight showing of Batman; a movie the 17-year-old says she didn't have much interest in.

Inside, when shots were fired, Bonnie Kate was shot in the leg. Six months later, she is doing physical therapy and can walk with the help of crutches. She says someone offered to pay for her to go to the trial, for closure, but she says she has already forgiven the shooter; even though she says she wonders why God spared her.

"I have so so so much to be thankful for. I'm just really grateful," she said.

James Holmes' attorneys plan to call witnesses this week to talk about his mental state. It could set the state for an insanity defense or a plea agreement, though he has not entered a plea yet.

Bonnie Kate says she is praying for James Holmes.
